REAL SOCIETY
Phil Collins

The María Cristina Hotel, 12th of July 2002

Real Society is Phil Collins's contribution to D.A.E.'s invitation to take part in the Front Line Compilation programme.

Since he first came to San Sebastián Phil Collins has proposed to create a device that would make it easier for him to get to know the people of the city. Inspired by the name of the football team Real Sociedad he decided to set up a meeting with the people of San Sebastián in the most emblematic hotel in the city, the María Cristina. This is how the idea came about to organise a photography session that was open to anyone who wanted to share any intimate expressions of their nakedness with him in one of the most select settings in the city.

The idea for Real Society arose in connection with a series of photographs by Collins entitled Beautiful Boys that shows boys and girls from Belfast taking their clothes off. The interest of the artist in these images lies in the very awkwardness of these models' gestures that create a certain sense of vulnerability in their presence. It is in this sense of insecurity that the key to this series lies, which is to create a new image of the "lads from Belfast", an image that avoids anything that brings to mind the violence that the media usually refer to.

Real Society plays with various parameters such as sexuality, the private sphere in the public sphere, local affairs, confession, glamour and fame.

Lately, Collins has been making use of public appeals based on castings or screen-tests such as when he asked 100 students from Baghdad University to be interviewed before a video camera. His photographs and videos show the everyday personal experiences of people living in conflictive settings such as Belgrade, Belfast, the border in Kosovo, Tirana and other places.
