Jakob Kolding

D.A.E. presents a commissioned project by Jakob Kolding (1971, Albertslund, Denmark) in San Sebastian.

Jakob Kolding presents his new posters-project in which he takes three case studies in relation to the use of public space in the city of San Sebastian, Spain.Jakob Kolding’s work gathers together a personal, theoretical and sceptical debate about the social control of urban space, the practical action of measuring obedience towards authority patterns, community role playing, power relations, anti-social behaviour or the effects of the social housing blocks.

Employing the collage technique used in Russian Constructivism and the avant-garde, in his work, Kolding overlaps elements of urbanism and the clichés of the urban planning language together with social theory, football images, graffiti, parks, dj-ing culture, public sculpture and modular building construction.

In general, all these elements bring reference to certain criterion of urban-planning, at the same time that relate to young style, subculture, territory, radical democracy or the promise of an European social-democracy.

In San Sebastian, Jakob Kolding has taken as case study:
1) the effect in the city of football and the urban surroundings of the stadium as a private/public hybrid space.
2) the political scales of public sculpture shown in the specific scale of these same sculptures.
3) The intersection between the everyday use and the social organisation of public space.

In his work, Jakob Kolding manages to subvert the language of urbanism using examples of everyday practice and continuous references to pop culture.
