Goierri Konpeti
Iñaki Garmendia and Asier Mendizabal

Sala Kutxa. c/Arrasate 12, Donostia, 5th of July, 2002, 8:00 p.m.

The artists Iñaki Garmendia and Asier Mendizabal are screening their video Goierri Konpeti for the first time for the Front Line Compilation programme. This film focuses on formulating an almost anthropological vision of the life of a group of young people who share a common passion: rally cars. To do this, the artists join the group and share their activities with them until they manage to get the presence of the camera to gradually fade into the background as they get used to their characters being recorded. Goierri Konpeti is a closer look at interpersonal relations and the environment that surrounds these young people.

This event-presentation includes the chance to meet the main characters in the documentary and to take a closer look at the group's rally car that has been customised by the artists.
In relation to the Front Line Compilation programme, this video also acts as a catalyst for some of the ideas they share such as the relations between the individual and his integration in a group and the maintenance of collective identity through a subculture.

"Goierri Konpeti is what a group of young people call themselves who base their relationship around cars. It is a name that does not refer to any specific activity, although it alludes to competitions. They do insist on remembering the environment that they move around in. Goierri is a rural industrial district in the Basque Country without large towns, as it made up of scattered small villages that surround a conurbation of larger villages. The interpersonal relations of these young people and the codes that regulate these are presented as part of this landscape, that in turn conditions and contextualises their behaviour, in a feedback process that creates the meaning in the narrative."
